Educational Programs for Horticulture, Gardening, Ecology, and Landscape Architecture

The Bay Area is rich with many programs related to plants, landscape design, ecology, and gardening. The alphabetical links below are only a partial listing. The links will take you to the relevant pages for each school/program.

Cabrillo College Horticulture Program
This program serves career students and home gardeners. The campus is located in Aptos.

Center for Agroecology and Sustainable Food Systems, UC Santa Cruz
The UCSC program is dedicated to increasing ecological sustainability and social justice in the food and agriculture system. They specialize in organic production methods, and offer a 6 month live-in Apprenticeship program.

City College, San Francisco Program in Environmental Horticulture and Floristry
Training is offered in four fields: commercial cut-flower and greenhouse production, landscape gardening and landscape contracting, nursery and garden-center operation, and retail floristry.

College of Environmental Design (Landscape Archictecture & Environmental Planning), UC Berkeley
Undergraduate and Graduate degrees are offered in this established program.

College of Natural Resources (CNR) UC Berkeley
Programs in Biology, Environmental Sciences, Forestry and related fields. Undergraduate and graduate dgrees.

Common Ground Organic Garden Supply and Education Center
Common Ground Organic Garden Supply and Education Center is a non-profit project of Ecology Action, an organization dedicated to GROW BIOINTENSIVE food-raising. They offer gardening classes throughout the year and have an extensive reference library on Biointensive and organic gardening and related subjects.

Environmental Studies Department, UC Santa Cruz
An interdisciplinary program in ecological systems and human society. Undergraduate and graduate degrees are offered.

Foothill College Horticulture Program
Teaching principles of environmental design, construction and maintenance practices for urban, rural and natural landscapes.

Gamble Garden Classes
Gamble Garden brings in many well-known experts in all areas related to gardens and plants.

Merritt College in Oakland
A. S. degree & certificates in Landscape Design & Construction, Nursery Management, Landscape & Parks Maintenance, Turf & Landscape Management, & Horticultural Therapy. Also offered is a series in Aesthetic Pruning.

Strybing Arboretum Classes
Strybing offers many classes, workshops, and field trips by well-known experts. Many classes can be used towards a Certificate in California Gardening or Ornamental Plants.

A statewide educational resource for sustainable agriculture.

UC Berkeley Extension Garden Design Certificate Course
The students develop the expertise to design residential gardens. There is also a program in Landscape Architecture which will help the student earn partial qualification credit needed to take the landscape architecture licensing exam.
